Lean in close to that small number on his chest; there is a date I wrote there by hand. The date of a goal, a victory, or perhaps the day a child first stepped into the stands. While painting Mr Roo, every detail found its meaning: the names of players stretching from the team's past to its present, goal counts, slogans, symbols. I worked through each one, slowly, with patience. Because this is not a jersey. It is the quiet archive of a belonging passed from one generation to the next.
Red always rested at the tip of my brush like a heartbeat. When it meets yellow, a joy spreads through the space, a lightness that feels almost childlike. Mr Roo is the heart of the My Team Series, a character who carries the whole story the way a supporter's memory does, playful and yet just as deep.
This sculpture, 45 x 30 x 30 cm, was hand-shaped from composite, hand-painted, and signed. A single piece, a one-of-a-kind work in the collection, there is no other like it.
